I sit now, quietly, with a sense of impending doom.
I glance at my shelf.
The truck is there.
What hides inside has terrified me.
My skin grows cold, terrified sweat trickles down my neck.
I must look away.
Twas just a childhood lark, we had told ourselves, taking that little truck apart.
Replacing bones of plastic and thin steel with titanium and thick aluminium.
Tearing out its simple electronics, replacing them with something smarter
And then
Installing the heart of a monster
The thundrous, furious, pounding heart of an unfettered, slavering wild BEAST.
We do not know what we did that day.
A childhood lark, like Victor Frankenstein gadding about, assembling his own doom with his own hands.
I am the only one left now.
I glance back at the shelf, and my heart stops in my chest.
This thing, this demon, this accursed beast! It has settled back on its springs, raised its nose high.
Light glints menacingly off the anodized red aluminium.
It is proudly showing me its heart of doom.
The raging, bestial core, given to it by mine own hands.
Soon it will be my end.
It settles on the shelf, lulled to sleep by my terrified weeping.
Not just yet, it has decided.
It is having too much fun
